HBCU Alumni have passion, perseverance and purpose.  They are held together by ties that bond them through history and legacy. Those characteristics were on full display during the September 25, 2021 Historic HBCU Photograph taken in Morningside Park, Harlem, NY. During the covid pandemic the world was subjected to a myriad of death, segregation and social injustice.

The lifeblood of HBCU was literally pushed to the brink of extinction. Campus education was eliminated, graduation and homecoming gatherings were canceled. Because HBCUs exist and depend on Alumni and Student engagement, many HBCU faced closure.

In Harlem a small resourceful and cause driven nonprofit media company decided to face the task of gathering HBCU alumni in a statement of solidarity. Bridging Structural Holes, blessed with a team mission conscious local alumni reached in their vast networks to create the photograph that still leaves people wondering "How." One Hundred sixty 9160) HBCU alumni exhibiting One Hundred Eighty Five (185) years of struggle for Higher Education equity, gathered on those steps to take what will forever be known as the Historic HBCU Photograph.

HBCU Film Series Take 1 -
Harlem History is HBCU History, which is Black History. 2024 BHM will be the launch date of the HBCU Film Series. Five (5) NYC Harlem/Bronx High Schools will screen the Historic HBCU Photograph/ Documentary. The limited engagement screening will include a Panel Discussion/ Talk Back session with esteemed members of both HBCU/Divine 9 culture. This was an Unprecedented opportunity for Urban High School students to learn about Black Greek Letter Organizations and the Higher Education that was once out of reach and denied. Several screenings are planned for Connecticut.

Artist Demonstration: “Beyond Layers: Relief Printing and Pronto Plate Lithography”  @ https://www.featherstoneart.org/

Delita Martin is an artist currently based in Huffman, Texas. She received a BFA in drawing from Texas Southern University and an MFA in printmaking from Purdue University. Formerly a member of the Fine Arts faculty at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Martin is currently working as a full-time artist in her studio, Black Box Press.
Primarily working from oral traditions, along with vintage and family photographs as a source of inspiration, Martin explores the power of the narrative impulse.
Her finished works combine collage, drawing, painting, printmaking and sewing techniques, placing her figures amid patterns to represent visually what it looks like when we become the  spiritual other: "when we pray or meditate … we enter the veilscape." Martin's layering of technique and material, as well as her use of pattern and colour, signify a liminal space – the space between the waking life and the spirit life. By fusing this visual language with oral storytelling in this different space she offers other identities and other narratives for women of colour.
Martin’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Most recently, her  work was shown at the 2022 Venice Biennale, National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, DC and welcomed into the Library of Congress. She served as 2021 Keynote speaker for the Mid-America Print Council.

This documentary Is the story of the unsung, pioneering transformational scholar who strengthened the chorus of justice, peace and equal opportunity for all. In the first half of the 20th century, Ira de Augustine Reid was the first African American who had taught at a predominantly Black Southern university to pioneer the acceptance of faculty who looked like him at predominantly White Northern universities. Before joining the faculty at Pennsylvania’s Haverford College, Reid taught at Atlanta and Columbia Universities. His study of Black immigrant communities resulted in a close working relationship with W. E. B. DuBois after being hired by him in 1934. He later mentored a young Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who served as a research assistant to Reid.
Director Rel Dowdell and Dr. Cornel West will discuss the the legacy of Dr. Ira Reid .

Sailing to Freedom at the Martha's Vineyard Museum runs through Sept. 22.

In 1842, John Thompson was looking for a way to flee the United States. An escaped slave, he had made his way from a Maryland plantation to a fragile freedom in Philadelphia. Fearing recapture by slave traders he continued northward to New Bedford where he found work as a ship hand aboard the Milwood, captained by Aaron Luce of Tisbury, Martha’s Vineyard.

The story of Mr. Thompson, who recounts befriending Mr. Luce in his autobiography The Life of John Thompson, is one of dozens featured in Sailing to Freedom, a new exhibit at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum which considers the Underground Railroad’s lesser known sea routes and their connection to Martha’s Vineyard.
Kate Logue, assistant curator at the museum, said the exhibit aims to “expand people’s understanding of the Underground Railroad.”

In the antebellum period, travel to freedom overland was available only for a handful of enslaved men and women living in states such as Maryland and Virginia, Ms. Logue said. Travel by sea, especially by the freight vessels that carried commercial goods up and down the Atlantic, was a more readily available means of escape.

2p - 3p The Honorable Dee Clemmons https://search.app.goo.gl/jx6GoK5 , Spelman College, Building Generational Wealth through Franchising. @ The Oak Bluffs Public Library

Building generational wealth through franchising can be a strategic and effective approach. Franchising provides a proven business model, brand recognition, and support systems that can significantly reduce the risk and uncertainty often associated with starting a business from scratch. Here are some steps and considerations to help build generational wealth through franchising:

1. Understanding Franchising
Definition and Benefits:

Franchise: A franchise is a business model where a franchisee purchases the rights to operate a branch of a well-established company (the franchisor).
Benefits: Includes brand recognition, training, support, established supply chains, and marketing strategies.

2. Research and Selection
Industry Selection:

Choose an industry with growth potential and stability. Common industries include food and beverage, health and fitness, retail, and home services.
Franchise Selection:

Research: Investigate various franchise opportunities. Consider factors such as initial investment, royalty fees, franchisee support, and profitability.
Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD): Review the FDD carefully to understand the financial health and obligations of the franchise.

3. Financial Planning and Investment
Capital Requirements:

Assess the total investment needed, including franchise fees, equipment, inventory, working capital, and real estate costs.
Secure financing through savings, loans, or investors.
Budgeting:

Create a detailed budget for the initial setup and ongoing operations.

4. Training and Development
Franchisor Training Programs:

Participate in training programs offered by the franchisor to understand business operations, management, and marketing.
Continuous Learning:

Stay updated with industry trends and continuous training to improve business operations and growth.

5. Operations and Management
Operational Excellence:

Focus on maintaining high standards in operations, customer service, and employee management.
Standardization:

Adhere to the franchisor’s guidelines to ensure consistency and quality.

6. Scaling and Expansion
Multiple Units:

Consider owning multiple franchise units to increase revenue and spread risk.
Territory Development:

Negotiate exclusive territories with the franchisor for future expansion.

7. Legacy Planning
Succession Planning:

Develop a clear succession plan to pass the business to the next generation.
Involve family members in the business early to prepare them for leadership roles.
Legal and Financial Structuring:

Set up trusts, wills, and other legal structures to ensure smooth transition and tax efficiency.

8. Long-term Vision and Adaptability
Long-term Goals:

Set clear long-term goals for the business, focusing on sustainability and growth.
Adaptability:

Be adaptable to changes in the market and consumer behavior. Innovate and evolve the business as needed.
Practical Steps for Implementation

  • Initial Research:Identify potential franchises and gather detailed information about each option.
Financial Assessment:Evaluate your financial capacity and explore funding options.
Engage Experts:Consult with franchise consultants, financial advisors, and legal experts.
Franchise Agreement:Negotiate terms and sign the franchise agreement.
Setup and Launch:Establish the business location, hire staff, and launch operations.
Monitor and Improve:Regularly review business performance and make improvements.
Growth Strategy:Plan for expansion and scaling opportunities.
By following these steps and maintaining a strategic approach, franchising can be a powerful vehicle for building and sustaining generational wealth.

About:

Described as the first Black supermodel, Donyale Luna had a pioneering life and career that saw her become the first Black model to appear on a Vogue cover when she graced the British edition of the fashion magazine in 1966.

Followed by a live Q and A with the producers Isoul H. Harris and Melissa Kramer

DONYALE LUNA: SUPERMODEL chronicles the remarkable life and career of Donyale Luna, the first Black model to grace the cover of both Harper’s Bazaar (1965) andVogue (1966). Breaking barriers in the fashion industry, challenging the prevailing ideals of beauty, and influencing culture in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Luna remains largely unknown despite her stunning body of work and her collaborations with some of the foremost fashion photographers of the 20th century.

“The story of the short, brilliant career of the first Black supermodel is told, and what a story! Rich, intensely visual, sad, and beautifully executed by Nailah Jefferson.” – What She Said

Isoul Hussein Harris is a multifaceted writer, editor, producer, and strategist passionate about stories that shape culture. He has worked in media, education, publishing, tech, financial services, and travel, exploring more than 100 countries.

In 2023, the Morehouse College and New York University graduate debuted his first film as a producer—HBO’s DONYALE LUNA: SUPERMODEL, the story of the first Black model to grace Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue magazines.

He also served as the Executive Editor at Large for EBONY, leading the content creation for the unique, commemorative 2023 Issue celebrating Hip Hop’s 50 years of cultural disruption.

Harris previously led UPTOWN—a print and digital platform showcasing affluent Black life and celebrity during the Obama Years—where he featured artists, actors, philanthropists, legends, futurists, and iconoclasts such as Lenny Kravitz, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jada Pinkett Smith, Michael B. Jordan and Lupita Nyongo, whose cover of UPTOWN marked her first significant collaboration with a Black photographer.

In 2021, Harris co-created and served as the founding Editor-in-Chief of Modern Luxury’s EDITION–an inclusive luxury lifestyle platform centered around Black global culture that he launched with JAY-Z’s Roc Nation. He built the content infrastructure of EDITION—praised by Women’s Wear Daily, The Business of Fashion, Hypebeast, and Complex —focusing on innovative inclusivity, music, art, high fashion, and elevated narratives.

As the Deputy Editor of Mosaic—Morgan Stanley’s exclusive luxury lifestyle platform where he won Platinum MarCom Awards for Best Creative Magazine and Best Digital Magazine—and the Director of Strategic Partnerships for Surface—the American magazine for contemporary art and design—he developed experiential programming centered in global finance, film, art, travel, and fashion.

Harris resides in The Republic of Brooklyn.

With a keen eye for fresh and unique aesthetics, Melissa Kramer has contributed as a Creative Director and Producer leading communication design and concepts forward as well as developing and producing original lifestyle/celebrity/fashion content for leading global companies including Condé Nast, BET, Ralph Lauren, Essence, BMW, and UPTOWN. Her work includes multiple celebrity fashion and cover editorials with such talents as Lenny Kravitz, Iman, Kerry Washington, Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross to name a few. Most recently, she made her debut as a filmmaker with the HBO documentary, DONYALE LUNA: SUPERMODEL. Originally from Minneapolis, she currently resides in South Orange, NJ.

Fishing holds significant cultural, historical, and personal meaning for many Black people, encompassing both recreational and subsistence aspects. Here are several dimensions of its significance:

Historical and Cultural Significance

Historical Roots: Fishing has long been a part of African American history. Enslaved Africans and their descendants often relied on fishing as a means of sustenance and survival. This practice was passed down through generations, becoming an integral part of many Black communities.

Cultural Heritage: Fishing traditions and techniques have been preserved and passed along, representing a connection to ancestry and cultural identity. The knowledge of water bodies, fish species, and fishing methods can serve as a link to past generations and traditional ecological knowledge.

Personal and Community Benefits

Mental and Emotional Well-being: Being on open waters and engaging in fishing can offer immense mental health benefits. The act of fishing can be meditative, providing a sense of peace, relaxation, and a break from daily stress. The rhythmic motion of casting a line, the sound of water, and the immersion in nature contribute to reducing anxiety and improving overall well-being.

Sense of Accomplishment: The success of a good catch brings a profound sense of achievement. It involves skill, patience, and knowledge, and the reward is both tangible (in the form of the fish) and intangible (in the sense of accomplishment and pride).

Community and Bonding: Fishing can be a communal activity, fostering bonds between family members, friends, and community members. Group fishing trips and community fishing events strengthen social ties and build a sense of camaraderie and mutual support.

Socioeconomic Impact

Economic Opportunities: For some, fishing is more than just a hobby; it's a livelihood. Selling the catch can provide financial support for families and contribute to local economies, especially in coastal and riverine communities.

Food Security: Fishing contributes to food security, offering a reliable source of nutritious food. This can be particularly important in communities facing economic challenges or food deserts.

Challenges and Advocacy

Access to Water Bodies: Historically, Black people have faced barriers in accessing fishing locations due to segregation and discriminatory practices. Modern efforts advocate for equal access to public water bodies and the preservation of traditional fishing rights.

Representation: Increasing representation in outdoor and recreational activities like fishing challenges stereotypes and encourages more Black individuals to participate in these activities. Organizations and movements that highlight Black anglers' stories and contributions help foster a more inclusive outdoor culture.

Environmental Stewardship

Conservation Efforts: Many Black anglers are involved in conservation efforts, promoting sustainable fishing practices and protecting aquatic ecosystems. This stewardship is crucial for maintaining healthy fish populations and water quality.

Education and Advocacy: Sharing knowledge about sustainable fishing and environmental conservation within the community helps ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy and benefit from fishing.

In summary, fishing offers Black individuals and communities a multifaceted experience that combines heritage, relaxation, accomplishment, community bonding, and environmental stewardship. It provides both tangible and intangible benefits, enriching lives and fostering a deeper connection to nature and cultural roots

The Mission of the Trail is to continue to enlighten the greater public about the previously undocumented history and contributions made by African-Americans to the island of Martha¹s Vineyard.

ABOUT
Founders of the African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard
Carrie Camillo Tankard and Elaine Cawley Weintraub met in 1989 and recognized that they had a common mission. Both women were determined to introduce the history of people of color into the Vineyard schools.
Elaine Cawley Weintraub
As a teacher, Elaine, who is of Irish heritage, realized that the students did not have access to the African American history of the Vineyard and found that history was not available anywhere, and so began her research. That research uncovered a rich, undocumented history. She will never forget the years spent researching old archives, burial records, birth records, wills and the joy of finding the career of William A. Martin, and the obituary of his remarkable grandmother, Nancy Michael. William A. Martin’s great grandmother was Rebecca Amos, the woman from Africa enslaved on the Vineyard.
Ms. Carrie, who is of African American and Latina heritage, had spent many years in her role as vice president of the NAACP of Martha’s Vineyard visiting the Island schools, presenting them with teaching materials, and strongly advocating for an inclusive history. For several years, she presented exhibits showcasing African American history in all of the Vineyard libraries.
Carrie Camillo Tankard
In 1989, they began their plan to combine their areas of expertise and the notion of building a physical Trail celebrating the stories of African American people on the Island was born. Their vision was to place bronze markers on the selected sites that told the story. They envisioned creating a Trail of four sites, and in 1998 dedicated the Shearer Cottage, the Vineyard’s oldest African American owned inn. Over the years, an active cultural heritage program was created and this helped to finance the further building of the Trail. In 2019, they dedicated site number 30, the Dukes County Courthouse where the career of Judge Herbert E. Tucker was celebrated.
They will continue to build the Trail, and dedicate many more sites.
The African American Heritage Trail continues to offer the cultural heritage tourism program and educational programs for schools and colleges, employment opportunities within the Vineyard community, and provides mentorships, scholarships for graduating seniors from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and advocacy services for students experiencing difficulty within the school system. The Cultural Heritage tour program each summer generates the income to provide all of these services, and to continue to build the Trail. The tours offered are authentically researched and our tour leaders are educated to provide a unique experience for our visitors.
Those who build the Trail can tell its story!

  • Intellectual and activist.
  • A leader and a visionary.

Hayden’s work as a teacher, writer, scientist, and historian, widely regarded as pioneering, spotlighted the history of African Americans in scientific fields, and contributed to the documented history of African American achievement.

He was also an award-winning writer, a founding member and director of the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO), and served as national secretary of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH); he was the founding president of the ASALH’s Martha’s Vineyard branch.

“Know your history!” Through a life dedicated to the research, recording and teaching of African American history, Robert Hayden would impart these three words to his family, friends, colleagues, and students to convey with conviction the importance of this charge.

Robert Carter Hayden Jr., known to most as “Bob,” entered eternal life on Jan. 23, 2022. Always the teacher, a trait he learned from his mother, he was a passionate and captivating storyteller. He never told a story just to tell it, but to then hear what you had learned through his words. He leaves behind a legacy as a beacon for the importance and joy of lifelong learning.

Born in New Bedford on August 21, 1937, the son of Robert C. Hayden and Josephine W. Hayden, he was a graduate of New Bedford High School in 1955, and attended Boston University, receiving his B.A. degree in 1959 and his master’s degree in 1961. He completed two postgraduate fellowships — one at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, and another in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) — between 1976 and 1977, and held an honorary doctorate from Bridgewater State College. Between 1994 and 1995, he was a scholar-in-residence at the New York Public Library Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Between 1961 and 1965, Hayden worked as a middle school teacher. In 1966, Hayden became an editor with Xerox Education Division, serving in that capacity for three years. Instrumental in the founding of the Boston METCO program, he served as executive director from 1970 to 1973.
In 1974, he moved to the Education Development Center in Newton, where he directed ethnic heritage studies projects for urban school districts. In 1980, he became the director of MIT’s Secondary Technical Education Project. From 1982 to 1987, he served as an assistant superintendent in the Boston Public School System.

Hayden served as president of Boston’s NAACP branch from 1986 to 1988, and was honored to receive the Distinguished Service Award from the branch in 2013. In addition, Hayden served for five years as the executive director of the Massachusetts Pre-Engineering Program, before retiring in 1992.
Hayden is well-known for his three pioneering works in the 1970s on the history of African Americans in science, technology, and medicine, which were widely distributed to schools and libraries across the country. In subsequent years he authored more than 20 publications on
African American history and culture.

From 1974 to 1983, he wrote a weekly column, “Boston’s Black History,” for the Bay State Banner newspaper in Boston. He was a contributing writer for the “Dictionary of American Negro Biography” (1982), the “Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History” (1995), and
“American National Biography” (1999).

Hayden held positions as a senior lecturer at the University of Massachusetts at Boston, Northeastern University, Boston College, and Lesley University, from 1978 to 2006.

A resident on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard, he served on the Oak Bluffs Historical Commission from 1998 to 2000, while leading African American history tours of the Island. He was the national secretary of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History
(ASALH), and the founding president of the Martha’s Vineyard branch of the ASALH.

In the later years of his life, he enjoyed playing golf every day he possibly could, anything and everything that had to do with his grandchildren, especially taking them fishing and spending days at the beach, enjoying Biscuits biscuits and gravy and his favorite restaurant, Deon’s, cooking, and painstakingly combing the shores of his beloved Martha’s Vineyard for the perfect rocks to create his “beach stone art.”

Father of Robert C. Hayden III (now reunited), Dr. Deborah Hayden, Kevin Hayden, Esq., and Karen McAdams, he is survived by his brother, William Hayden; five grandchildren, James Hayden Hall, Ella and Sebastian McAdams, and Jordan and Carson Hayden; son-in-laws Glenn Camilien and Jeffery McAdams; and daughter-in-law Michelle Hayden. He also leaves behind a loving community of neighbors, fellow Islanders, and many more who called him friend, mentor, and teacher.

Waistbead Workshop

We are excited to host Balebe's summer Waistbead Workshop at the Inkwell Beach during HBCU Legacy Week 2024!

HBCU Legacy Week is created to engage, empower, and highlight the bond and value of the alumni and students from all Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The” Inkwell” or Town Beach in Oak Bluffs is the name of the popular beach frequented by African Americans beginning in the late nineteenth century. The beach was pejoratively called “The Inkwell” in reference to the skin color of the beach-goers. It is the most famous of beaches across the U.S. to transform this odious nickname into an emblem of pride.

We gather at these waters to honor our people and heal ourselves in creativity and gratitude.

Feel free to bring your own beads or you can purchase a kit ahead of time - contact us at [email protected] for more information!

Join us for waistbeading, fun, relaxation and restoration.

ON TREND
WHAT’S WITH THE WAIST BEADS?

As we casually scroll through social media, ladies of African descent from around the world can be seen with exposed waistlines adorned in beautiful beads strung together with a variety of colors and patterns.  Fortunately for us, as black people, embracing African culture and heritage is currently a way of life as we seek to connect to our roots through literature, music, fashion, and body positivity. The wearing of waist beads just happens to be a small part of the movement, and to call them ‘a trend’ would be to ignore thousands of years of history.

Creating them helps to reconnect and celebrate African roots. Colors are stories that reflect a bold display of African culture, heritage and history that aims to stimulate pride in its wearers.

The tradition of wearing belly beads is an age-old one that has been a part of some African cultures, worn for varying reasons such as: coming of age gifts, protection from negative energy, and even as a tool to measure weight gain. It is similar to waist training but without having to squeeze the breath from your body and maybe shatter a rib. In parts of West Africa, they indicate a woman’s age, tribe and even marital status. Each string of bead holds with it the values, beauty and an amusing story of the African people.

While the purpose of waist beads are defined by the wearer, let’s delve deeper into two of its everyday uses:

BEAUTY AND BODY POSITIVITY

With the prevailing and very subjective Eurocentric standard of beauty being forced upon us by international mass media, we were taught to believe that beauty is a tiny waist and a flat stomach, when in reality, this is not so for the vast majority of women. These belly beads hang to fit and enhance the natural curvature of a woman’s body regardless of shape or size. “Personally, they help me to be more aware of my body. From my posture by helping me remember to breathe from my belly. To also being a tool to watch my weight. As I know when it is tight or roll up I am gaining weight and when they fall I know I am losing,” Allen said.

 SEXUALITY

Being aware of the power wielded around your sexuality and getting in touch with your femininity are qualities every woman should possess and swathing your hips in these beaded strings helps the process for some. Allen suggests that it is equally okay to also wear them as a sexual treat for your man, as men tend to get excited by very intricate details on a woman’s naked body. “You can keep an extra special pair just for him so when he sees it, he knows what time it is,” she said with a smirk.

Also, some Ghanaian women were taught that wearing waist beads from an early age helps them achieve more rounded hips, a slim waist and fuller breasts. Hence, they used to be considered as underwear exclusively worn undergarments in Africa.

Truly, It doesn’t hurt to expand your wardrobe a bit while affixing your own intentions to your very own pair of belly beads.

The Color Purple

This bold new take on the beloved classic tells the story of three women who share one unbreakable bond. It tells the story of Celie, an African American woman dealing with the hardships of living with an abusive husband and living in the American South during the early 1900s.

A 2023 American musical period drama film directed by Blitz Bazawule. Marcus Gardley's screenplay is based on the stage musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It is the second film adaptation of the novel, following the 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Spielberg and Quincy Jones. Spielberg and Jones return as producers for the 2023 film, along with its Broadway producers Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, the latter of whom also starred in the 1985 film.

The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, and Fantasia Barrino in her film debut. Brooks and Barrino reprise their roles from the productions of the stage musical.

'When We Vote: Why It Matters'

OUR PURPOSE

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and Report for America have joined together once again to present a timely discussion on the power of our vote!

With news reports documenting the ongoing assault on voters’ rights, particularly when it comes to the voting rights of African Americans, we invite you to join us in helping to ensure accurate information is available to our communities as the election cycle approaches.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to combat disinformation and misinformation and other efforts that serve to leave our citizens uninformed and unaware of their power. This summer’s panel speaks to the heart of journalism — using our platforms to be vigilant in shedding light through truth, ensuring the voices of our audiences are not silenced, and holding accountable those in power.

Thank you for your interest! We look forward to working with you in this endeavor!

-Ken Lemon, President, NABJ

-Earl Johnson, Vice President, Report for America

THE PANEL

Date: Wednesday, August 7, 2024

Time: 5:30 - 7 PM, EDT

Place: Union Chapel, Martha’s Vineyard, 55 Narragansett Avenue, Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts

A new report from the Brennan Center for Justice details the growing racial voter gap

as Black voter participation has gone down since the Supreme Court dealt a major blow

to the Voting Rights Act in 2013.

For decades after the Voting Rights Act of 1965, there was a steady trend toward voting

equality, but since the decision in Shelby County v. Holder gutted protections for

voters in states with a history of discrimination, that positive trend has reversed.

Our esteemed panel will talk about the consequences of the increasing racial voter gap.

They will report on some of the acts across the country that are having an impact on

our right to vote and share some of the solutions being initiated to ensure that there is

equal access to the polls. They will also let the audience know what they can do to

strengthen the laws to reverse the trend.

SHERYL WESLEY ~

Finding a 'Happy Place' on Martha's Vineyard is the amalgamation of Sheryl’s true definition of intention and walking in life’s purpose.  She has an extensive history in creative spaces, including the entertainment industry, fashion, advertising, and event planning.

This zest for life led Sheryl to become the brainchild behind HBCU Brand Partners, LLC which leads out the charge for Legacy Week on The Vineyard (aka HBCU Week on Martha’s Vineyard) to highlight the Legacy of all HBCUs. This highly anticipated annual event is the place for attendees to relax, recharge and reconnect while acknowledging alumni and supporters of HBCUs. Legacy Week was founded in 2016 after being the Chairwoman for Howard University's Alumni Association's signature event, Bison on the Vineyard 2013 - 2015.

Through these efforts Sheryl has founded I Am Historically Black, an apparel line geared toward the African American lifestyle on the Vineyard and the significance of HBCUs. She is also the Managing Partner of Experience MVY Magazine, a digital platform that holds an ever-expanding team of community members, writers, and contributors of Vineyard life.

Sheryl works at ABFE, Association of Black Foundation Executives, A membership philanthropic organization that advocates for responsive and transformative investments in Black communities

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard University in Communications with an emphasis in Radio/Television/ Film and a minor in Child Education.

Sheryl is known as America's Favorite +1 and the Best 'Fun'tie to her all her nieces & nephews!

Event Summary

Legacy Week on the Vineyard was created to engage, empower, and highlight the bond and value of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This will be an ideal opportunity to relax, connect with fellow HBCU alumni and their families, and participate in events both fun and impactful. We will party with a purpose, build new bonds, and get strategic in sustaining the legacies of our great schools.
