2240 Gallery presents A Creative Conversation

Goal:
Bring creatives from various disciplines and ages, both already in our 2240 Gallery/ConTextos constellation and from the community, together to discuss being a creative in 2022. The good, the bad, and the unknown. Underrepresented creatives often have to go through trial and error to get the grasp of their practice. The resources and mentors oftentimes are not available to map out or give advice for the creative journey they are embarking on. This creates an added layer of obstacles that could be avoided if the knowledge was accessible to these creatives. Especially in Chicago the individualistic mindset due to these lack of resources and opportunities causes a divide in the community that resists sharing information. These talks will aim to combat the halt of sharing information by giving the space for creatives to ask the questions they have and find the community that supports them. A time to share frustrations and also be celebrated and reassured in their craft.

Flow: This will not be a panel discussion with a call and response flow. This will be similar to a Circle where everyone in the space has equal opportunity to ask and answer questions. The circle will be facilitated by Kalief and Luz (2240 Gallery Curators) to mediate the flow with prompts to evoke conversation, while also allowing natural conversation to take place.

About Kalief and Luz:
"The south side of Chicago raised me and made me an Artist. I am entrenched in culture, fashion, sports, and fine-art. Simply put, I bring ideas to life; juxtaposing art and culture as well as the strategy of using creativity, experimentation and great design to inspire and benefit the people around me. I’ve been creative all my life but I got into painting my Junior year of high school. The first thing I ever painted was a pair of timberlands and Air Force 1’s. I always challenge my creativity and that has took me from painting shoes to painting Murals around Chicago. Art is my voice and I use it as an outlet to speak for myself and others. My Art depicts self growth paralleled to nature and chasing your dreams that satisfy your inner child." -Kalief Dinkins aka @Kaysean_

"Luz Magdaleno Flores is a Chicana art curator, poet, textile artist, and fotografa based in Pilsen by way de Oxnard, California. Also known as DJ Light of Your Vida. She aims to evoke feelings of nostalgia and melancholy in everything she creates. The cholos or gangeros who occupy the hoods shes lived in are her biggest influences in her practice. She looks up to gente who are so often deemed violent or problematic because they are survivors in communities that lack resources and compassion. She does this work to inspire youngsters of color to create and believe in the worth of our stories." @lightofyourvida
