Leading Morning movement: Ed Hardy

Ed Hardy is the founder of Wake the 8.

About Wake the 8

Wake the 8 DC promotes physical fitness and mental wellness. Wake the 8 DC started in January 2022 with the aim to continue the movement of providing our Ward 8 families and beyond with healthier habits that aren’t normally seen or utilized in our communities.

About our Yoga Instructor: Mellie Harris

Mellie Harris is a 200 hour trauma-informed social emotional learning (SEL) yoga instructor and visionary force on a mission to transform lives through the power of holistic wellness. As the founder of BzyBplr (Pronounced Busy Bipolar), she has dedicated her life to empowering individuals challenged by bipolar symptoms and other mood-related mental health diagnoses, to reclaim control of their health and well-being.

Driven by her own journey, Mellie understands the challenges and complexities of managing mental health. Instead of letting it define her, she has channeled her experiences into creating hope for others. Through a unique blend of yoga inclusive of meditation, kickboxing, and outdoor recreation, Mellie provides a nurturing environment where individuals can release limiting mindsets and explore self-discovery and healing.

Her compassion knows no bounds as she tirelessly advocates for mental health awareness and acceptance. A 30-year-old, 4th generation DC native, and homeowner, Mellie is an active member and peer advocate in her Ward 8 community. She is also a dedicated mother to her two boys, ages 9 and 6.

Come enjoy a witty, silly, fun, internal dive that will increase your body awareness, bring focus to your breath, and center you into the moment. Because, all that matters is now.

The Sharp Snack Co.

Rauland Sharp (owner of The Sharp Snack Co.) was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. At an early age, he was exposed to a vast array of foods, but also witnessed food disparities in the communities he lived and attended school in. While attending Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, Florida his interest in history and foodways led him to take a class on food sustainability. However, he also witnessed first-hand how fast food and a lack of connection to African foodways negatively impacted African-American communities across the country.

The Hustlers Guild

The Hustlers Guild is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by three Obama Administration alumni to address violence and the lack of positive exposure in the youth population. Based in D.C., HG’s mission focuses on the college readiness and professional development of youth ages 10 - 19 by creating a pipeline to careers in fine arts, technology, and entertainment. HG uses popular culture as a vehicle to assist more youth from under-resourced communities interested in opportunities beyond their block and provides positive alternatives to violence. “Don’t Shoot Guns, Shoot Cameras” is an initiative that helps youth learn the aspects of the film industry while providing a creative alternative to gun violence.
