Juneteenth Village Fest headliners: Common, Dead Prez, and Domani, plus an amazing line-up of local talent, carnival rides, games, local talent, and food and music to provide a space for the ITAV Family of Schools, partner organizations, and the broader community to commemorate the liberation of African descendants from the institution of slavery.
What is Juneteenth? Juneteenth honors the date, June 19, 1865, when the last Confederate community of enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, received word that they had been freed from bondage. Thousands of guests will be inspired to reflect upon the profound legacy and ancestral roots of Black people as programming highlights the resilience, solidarity, culture, and progress of Black communities.
Why Douglass Park? Students and educators of Village Leadership Academy campaigned for over three consecutive years to successfully rename Stephen Douglas Park in the North Lawndale Community to honor Black abolitionists Anna Murray Douglass and Frederick Douglass, setting a citywide precedent. Their concerted efforts became known as the “Change the Name” Campaign, with an award-winning film of the same title documenting the process. “Change the Name” debuted on BET and has since screened at film festivals across the world. Information on how our Village Leadership Academy students renamed Douglass Park through Grassroots Campaigns efforts can be found here.
