During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, the National Urban League in partnership with Hip-Politics are creating an epicenter of discussion, connection, and celebration of this historic moment. On Tuesday, August 20th, we will be transforming the Chicago Firehouse into the Hip Politics Culture and Content House, offering sessions that will explore critical issues at the intersection of hip-hop culture, civic engagement, and voting.  

Admission is based on venue capacity. Early arrival is recommended to ensure entry.

The Culture and Content House Panel Programming: 

9:00am - 10:00am

Being Counted: The Case for DC Statehood & Congressional Representation: This session will explore the ongoing efforts to achieve statehood for Washington, D.C., and the implications for congressional representation. Experts and advocates will discuss the historical context, legal challenges, and political dynamics surrounding the push for statehood. The session aims to highlight the importance of equal representation for D.C. residents and the broader impact on American democracy.

The Time is NOW: How Civil Right Organizations Continue to Defend Democracy, Demand Diversity, and Defeat Poverty in 2024 and Beyond:  In the panel "The Time is NOW: How Civil Rights Organizations Continue to Fight for Democracy in 2024 and Beyond," prominent civil rights leaders headlined by the National Urban League CEO Marc Morial will discuss the critical role of advocacy in defending democracy against modern threats. The conversation will emphasize forward-looking strategies to address voter suppression, inequality, and the erosion of democratic norms in the years to come.

The Future of DEI: The Work Continues for Diversity and Equity Inclusion: This session will focus on strategies and best practices for fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in various sectors. This session aims to equip participants with actionable tools to advance equity and inclusion in their organizations and communities.

1:15pm - 2:30pm

Pathways to Wellness: Mental Health Support for Returning Citizens: This session will focus on the critical importance of mental health services for individuals reentering society after incarceration. Experts and practitioners will discuss effective strategies for providing comprehensive support, reducing recidivism, and facilitating successful reintegration. The session aims to highlight innovative approaches and collaborative efforts to enhance mental health outcomes for returning citizens.


Presented by Climate Power 

Waiting To Inhale: A Climate Justice Conversation: This session, led by CLIMATE POWER, will address the intersection of environmental issues and social justice, focusing on the disproportionate impact of climate change on marginalized communities. This discussion will also discuss the progress on environmental policy that has been accomplished in the past 3 years. This session aims to empower participants with knowledge and tools to drive equitable environmental change.

Presented by Hip-Politics 

Rising Up: Amplifying the New Voices Shaping Democracy: This session will highlight emerging leaders and activists who are driving change and reshaping democratic processes. Panelists will discuss their experiences, the challenges they face, and the innovative approaches they use to engage communities and influence policy. This session aims to inspire and equip attendees with strategies to support and amplify new diverse voices shaping democracy.

Redefining Representation: Building an Inclusive Media Future: This session will explore the importance of diversity and inclusion in media and its impact on shaping societal narratives.
