A POWERFUL MOVIE FOR A POWERFUL CAUSE
This event is a FREE screening of the BET+ movie, KEMBA - a film based on a true story that follows the journey of Kemba Smith Pradia, a sheltered college student who falls in love with a man who turns out to be a drug dealing kingpin. Despite never dealing with drugs, Kemba was suddenly caught in the “war on drugs” and sentenced to more than 24 years in prison. After a determined fight for justice by her parents and influential political forces, Kemba was granted clemency - but the same cannot be said for her former cellmate, Michelle West, who now needs us to fight for her the way the nation fought for Kemba in the 90’s.
Pre-screening will be a FREE reception to raise awareness and support for the Free Michelle West campaign, and both Director Kelley Kali and Kemba Smith Pradia will be in attendance. Also featuring special guest, Nicole "Coco" Davis. Come out to meet these amazing women!
Michelle West now has a very real shot at clemency - after 30 years! Michelle’s story, like Kemba’s, exposes the systemic dismissal of the domestic violence that accompanies most women’s imprisonment. We want to inspire audience members to help gain the attention of President Biden at this crucial moment. The goal is for Michelle West to be among those who receive clemency at the end of the year. But there is a higher purpose as well: to amplify and address the circumstance of thousands of incarcerated women and the harm to society at large.
Join some of Chicago's change makers and way makers in politics, law, media and more for a good movie for a good cause!
