Umu Igbo Unite is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cultural awareness and supporting charitable works in Southeastern Nigeria. The North Carolina Chapter has cultural development events throughout the year including language, dance, and cooking classes to ensure that the next generation is able to retain the culture of their ancestors.

We will be learning how to make Egusi soup. Egusi is the name for the protein-rich seeds of melons that are native to Nigeria, which, after being dried is then ground to make the base of this hearty soup. Assortments of meat and vegetables are added to the soup and it is eaten with 'swallow,' a term that refers to either fufu, pounded yam, farina or any starch based stretchy dough that is eaten with the soup.

Join us and learn about making egusi soup. And fellowship with the community as well!
